Pharmaceutical-grade purified water, hydrosols, and aqueous components that carry actives into the skin. Hydrosols—distilled from plants—contribute their own functional and sensory benefits.
Non-nano zinc oxide, mineral clays (Rhassoul, kaolin), and mineral salts that provide structure, sun protection, and balance. Our non-nano zinc oxide (>100nm) is reef-safe and remains on the skin's surface.

Where a synthetic ingredient offers clear, measurable benefit, we include it with intention. Some of the most studied and effective actives in modern skincare are created through controlled processes. Within ISUN, these are expressed through our CMP actives—Complex Multi-Pathway compounds—selected to work in harmony with the skin while delivering targeted, clinically supported results.
Each CMP active is chosen against four essential criteria: a defined and published mechanism, precision of action, compatibility with cold-process formulation, and synergy within the complete formula.
Examples include: Niacinamide, known to reduce melanin transfer and support the ceramide barrier; Sodium Hyaluronate, capable of binding up to 1,000 times its weight in water; Lingostem™, shown to improve skin density in clinical study; Pentavitin®, which binds to the skin's natural moisturising factors to support long-lasting hydration.
When synthesis or fermentation is used, it is for a reason. These pathways can offer greater purity, consistency between batches, and often a lower environmental impact than traditional extraction—while ensuring the molecule performs exactly as intended.
Every such ingredient is supported by peer-reviewed research, fully disclosed, and clearly explained. Within each formulation, the presence of synthetics remains minimal—typically less than 5%—yet purposeful. Because every ingredient, whether natural or created, must earn its place.
The organic percentage shown for each ISUN formula is calculated using ISO 16128, the internationally recognized standard for natural and organic cosmetics.
Quite simply, we measure how much of the entire formula in the bottle, by weight, comes from certified organic agricultural ingredients.
That means we calculate against everything in the formula — including water, mineral salts, botanicals, emulsifiers, and functional actives.
We do not remove water or salts to make the percentage appear higher.
Each ingredient is assessed individually. When a compound ingredient is used, such as an emulsifier blend, we break it down into its individual parts, and only the portions that are independently certified organic are counted.
Because water and salts cannot be certified organic, they remain part of the total formula weight but do not add to the organic percentage.
The result is a clear and honest number: the share of what is truly certified organic within everything in the bottle.
USDA Organic: A United States standard requiring a minimum of 95% organic content for products labeled "organic." It prohibits synthetic pesticides, genetically modified organisms, and ionizing radiation. Organic percentage is calculated excluding water and salt.
ECOCERT: A European certification body focused on natural origin and environmentally responsible processing. Organic percentage is calculated excluding water and minerals, including salts.
COSMOS Organic: A widely adopted European standard requiring that at least 95% of physically processed agro-ingredients are organic. It also sets strict requirements for sustainability, processing methods, and full supply chain traceability. Organic percentage is calculated excluding water and minerals.
Wild-Harvested Ingredients: Some botanicals are gathered from wild, unmanaged ecosystems rather than cultivated farms. While these ingredients cannot be certified organic—due to the absence of controlled agricultural systems—they may remain free from synthetic inputs. These are identified separately within our composition breakdown, offering further clarity into the origin of each ingredient.

This standard requires full INCI disclosure of every ingredient, ensuring nothing remains undefined. It restricts or prohibits over 1,300 substances, mandates independent safety assessments, and holds a designated responsible party legally accountable for every formulation.
Within this framework, even trace elements are honored. Fragrance allergens exceeding 0.001% in leave-on products and 0.01% in rinse-off products must be individually named—supporting clarity, safety, and informed choice for those with sensitivities.
