The Foundation of Healthy Skin

Dryness, flaking, rough texture and tightness are not simply cosmetic concerns. They can signal that skin is struggling to hold onto the water and lipids it needs to function at its best. At the center of this is the skin barrier.

Understanding how the skin barrier works and how it changes as we age is one of the most important steps in caring for your skin.

What is the skin barrier?

The skin barrier is primarily associated with the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the epidermis.

It is often described as having a “bricks and mortar” structure. The corneocytes, mature skin cells, form the bricks, while a lipid matrix rich in ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids surround them like mortar. Together, they form a remarkably effective protective layer.

A healthy skin barrier helps regulate trans epidermal water loss (TEWL) - the movement of water from within the skin into the surrounding environment. It also forms an important line of defense against external stressors.

When this barrier is not functioning optimally, water can escape more readily. Skin may begin to feel dry or tight and may show visible signs of flaking.

What happens to the skin barrier as we age?

Maturing skin undergoes structural and biochemical changes.

Sebum production tends to decline, epidermal renewal becomes slower, and the skin's ability to maintain some of the components involved in hydration and barrier function can decrease. Changes in the skin's lipid composition can also affect its ability to retain moisture.

The result is familiar to many people with mature skin: increased dryness, roughness, tightness and more visibly fine lines.

This is why effective skincare for dry, mature skin needs to do more than add moisture temporarily. It should help provide water to the skin, support moisture retention, replenish lipids and protect the skin's existing barrier.

Hydration and barrier support

Although closely connected, skin hydration and skin barrier support perform different roles.

Humectants help attract and bind water. Emollients help soften and smooth the spaces between surface skin cells. Oils and more occlusive ingredients can help reduce moisture loss by creating a protective layer over the skin.

A well-designed routine for dry, mature skin or a compromised skin barrier brings these functions together rather than relying on one type of ingredient alone. This whole-formula approach is central to ISUN.

For more than 20 years, ISUN has developed its understanding of which botanicals offer the most to the skin, how to preserve their beneficial nutrients and which active ingredients to pair them with. Our formulas combine botanical extracts, plant oils and active ingredients so they can work together to support skin function.

Building a barrier-supporting routine for dry, mature skin

Rather than relying on one rich cream, dry and mature skin can benefit from strategically layering hydration, active ingredients, lipid-rich oils and moisturizing formulas.

Phyto-Infusion Serum: concentrated support for maturing skin

Phyto-Infusion Serum forms the active serum step of the ritual. For mature skin, a serum delivers active ingredients and botanical compounds in a lightweight layer before richer lipid-based products are applied.

This makes Phyto-Infusion Serum particularly relevant when the goal is not simply to address dryness, but to support the broader needs of maturing skin, including hydration, texture and the appearance of fine lines.

Ultra Ruby Facial Oil: lipid-rich nourishment

Plant oils have an important role in skincare because they contain fatty acids and other lipid-soluble compounds.

Ultra Ruby Facial Oil provides a concentrated blend of botanical oils that helps replenish and soften dry skin. Applied over serum, the oil-rich formula complements the lipid component of a barrier-supporting routine while helping reduce dryness and roughness.

This is particularly important for mature skin as its natural oil production declines.

Phyto Antioxidant Moisturizing Cream: hydration, lipids and antioxidant support

Moisturizing is not simply about making the skin feel softer. An effective moisturizer helps create an environment where the skin can retain water more effectively while providing ingredients that support the surface lipid barrier.

Phyto Antioxidant Moisturizing Cream combines moisturizing botanicals and active ingredients selected for dry and maturing skin. It helps maintain hydration and softness while providing antioxidant support against oxidative stress caused by everyday environmental exposure.

Layered over Phyto-Infusion Serum and Ultra Ruby Facial Oil, it seals in the water and oil-based elements of the routine together.

Phyto Eye Cream: supporting thinner, more delicate skin

The skin around the eyes has distinct structural characteristics. It is thinner than skin across other areas of the face and contains fewer sebaceous glands, making dryness and fine lines particularly noticeable.

Phyto Eye Cream provides hydration, nourishment, and active-ingredient support for this delicate area.

Rather than treating the eye area as an extension of the rest of the face, a dedicated eye formula addresses its specific needs with an appropriate texture and ingredient concentration.

Soothing Relief Balm: reinforcing the final layer

For very dry skin, a balm performs an important function. Soothing Relief Balm creates a richer layer over the skin, helping to reduce moisture loss and protect areas that feel particularly dry and irritated.

This makes it a great night balm for skin that needs greater support, whether applied selectively to dry areas or layered over a serum and oil.

The science of layering skincare for mature skin

There is a logical sequence to a barrier-supporting skincare routine.

Phyto-Infusion Serum provides the lightweight hydration and active ingredient layer.

Ultra Ruby Facial Oil introduces lipid-rich botanical oils.

Phyto Antioxidant Moisturising Cream provides further hydration, emollience and antioxidant support. Phyto Eye Cream addresses the specific requirements of the delicate eye area.

And Soothing Relief Balm can provide a final, more occlusive layer to help limit moisture loss.

Each formula has a different role. Together, they address several of the fundamental requirements of dry, mature skin: water, lipids, moisture retention, antioxidant protection and barrier support.

Barrier support is the foundation, not a skincare trend

The skin barrier is sometimes discussed as though it was the latest development in skincare. In reality, barrier function is fundamental to skin physiology.

When skin has the water and lipids it needs and can better retain moisture, it can feel softer and smoother. Fine lines caused or accentuated by dehydration can also appear less pronounced.

The goal is not to fight the natural process of ageing. It is to understand what changes within the skin over time and formulate accordingly.

For ISUN, skin barrier support begins there: understanding the skin, preserving the beneficial nutrients in our botanicals, and combining them with active ingredients to support healthy skin at every stage of life.
